Blog #4, Feeling Greek, by Julie White

At times life comes fast and furious. This week the quick pace of these assignments has me feeling a bit frazzled. However, I have learned a lot of useful tips that I pray I can retrieve when the time comes. Exams don't come easy for me.

One thing that does come easy for me is the word Alumni. Although this words seems straight forward enough, it's not.

This complex Greek word changes depending upon the gender. According to the book, “When Worlds Collide”, on page 190, Alumni is defined as, “a group of men and women who have graduated from a school are alumni; one male graduate is alumnus; one female grad is an alumna. And to be perfectly correct, a group of female grade would be alumnae.”

It's my dream one day to be an Alumna. But for now, I'm content to be learning how to
spell it correctly. Some of the brightest people I know are Alumni. I admire their
determination to weed through piles of homework.

The second item I have learned this week is the importance of checking my own work.
Better yet, checking my work with fresh eyes. This week I helped a friend write website
content. Over several days I caught several misspelled words and words used incorrectly.

I don't have any examples of misspelled words to show you today other than my own work. Now that I'm a month into this Editing class and my awareness has reached new heights, I cringe at some of the blog article errors that I've written. May we all persevere in our quest for perfect grammar.

  1. I did not realize that “alumni” had a total of four forms, very interesting. Hopefully I will be able to remember this in the future. Thank you for writing about the word “alumni.”
I really like the cartoon you shared. Sometimes I feel like the mother in the picture.

  2. Julie, I really liked your picture of couple in Greek togas. I can never remember the rules with words like alumni. I think your post helps explain it and relate so it will be easier to remember. Thank you for posting that.
