Introducing... Cami Sabin

Hello, editing friends! My name is Cami Sabin (SAY-bin, no relation to Nick Saban). I graduated from Weber State the first time in December 2002 with a Communication Studies major and a Latin American Studies minor. After graduating, I worked at the Deseret Morning News as an editorial assistant for a couple of years and then chose to stay home full-time when my oldest was born.

Approximately 10 years later, my youngest started Kindergarten and I needed a new plan for my life. As luck would have it, I received a postcard from the Communication Department regarding the Master of Professional Communication program here at Weber. I applied, was accepted, and graduated last April. I currently work as an adjunct instructor teaching Interpersonal and Small Group Communication while I write about my research and consider applying to the University of Utah’s Ph.D. program. I love teaching, and working as an adjunct is a “test-run” to see if my goal of one day becoming a professor is actually the way I want to go.

So why am I in this class if I’ve already graduated? I’m here partly because I always wanted to take this class but never did, partly because I need all the help I can get as I write papers for submission to academic journals and other outlets, and partly because I would love to do freelance writing and editing work in addition to my other pursuits. I hope this class will help me improve my writing and editing skills as I look for those opportunities.

I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, sewing, crafting, visiting with good friends, and reading. I recently finished a fascinating book on women and polygamy in early Mormonism, and am now reading a book titled “White Trash,” about the history of class in America. I currently have two stacks of books on my nightstand – both over a foot tall and growing faster than they shrink – and my Amazon wish list is filled with books. I also collect unique nativity sets and vintage cake stands.

I’ve owned a small cake decorating business for nine years, which has been a great creative outlet for me while also providing some income. My cake business completely paid for the master’s program, which was such a blessing. As I move forward with other professional pursuits, I am phasing out my business and will eventually close completely.

My family enjoys traveling together. This summer we spent a week in Washington, D.C., and Virginia, and we are deciding between Hawaii and Alaska for next year’s adventure. We spend most summer weekends and school vacations camping or road-tripping. In fact, we’re headed to Bear Lake for Labor Day weekend. We are planning to spend the summer of 2023 in Europe.

Sheree will tell me I’ve used far too many commas in this introduction. I love AP style and am quite familiar with it, but I do wish AP would adopt the Oxford comma.

  1. Cami, I find it really amazing that you are still taking classes, even though you have your degree. I have a love of learning and probably use way to many commas also. It is nice to meet you.

  3. Cami,
your bit about wishing AP would adopt the Oxford comma made me laugh out loud. I'm sure the story behind how you began collecting unique nativity scenes is just as interesting as the collection you have. I wish you blessings on your (possible? probable?) pursuit of a PhD.
