There are ten secrets to writing well. Learning to use language properly takes time and preparation. The 11th secret is “treat every paragraph like its own small argument and summarize”. The 11th secret can be compared to the 3rd and 7th secrets. Writers should always resort back to their thesis statement for ideas. Each paragraph of a paper should have one main idea backed up by researched evidence and an analysis. Organizing your writing makes it easier to complete. Write the main idea or thesis and argue the case. After adding clear and concise information to the body of the paragraph remember to summarize.
Today I
ran into an instance of bad grammar usage
on a bulletin board at the grocery store. The
post was for anyone seeking a personal stylist and it read “bring a friend to
get both you’re nails done half off.” This is a classic example of confusing
possessives and contractions. I wasn’t very surprised to see the grammatical
error on the bulletin board because there were others. I noticed an
advertisement for lawn care services that read “call us for any lawn service
you need, mowing, edging, and gardening, we do it all.” This is an example of misusing
commas mistake number nine on the list. Grammar is tricky and sometimes hard to
catch. I think these boards are a great way to watch for our own mistakes
especially when advertising to mass audiences.
