Week #4- Topical Guide

The topical guide has a lot of information for us students to read and learn about. Something that really stood out to me as I was reading, was learning about the active vs. passive voice. The reason I found this to be interesting to me, is because I have heard this phrase in my job and so it is very applicable to me and my work that I am currently pursuing. The voice refers to the form of a verb and if the subject receives the action "the text book was written by her" than the voice would be passive. If it said something like "she wrote the story" it would be an active voice. Something that really helps me to remember what the difference between these two voices, is to remember if it is being said presently or if it has already been said.

A grammatical error I saw this week came from a pamphlet that I saw at church. When I walk into church each week, there is a layout of how the first hour is going to be and who the speaker are, and when they listed a number it was not written out. The number eight, was written as “8” instead of being written out in words. When a number is less than ten, than it needs to be written out. For example, “one, two three, four five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, 11, 12, 13…” etc. I would have never realized that before this class, but now I see that error everywhere! I even catch myself having to erase or backspace to correct how I write my numbers.

  1. I tend to get confused about active voice and passive voice. I'll need to study up on them. Your tip on how to remember the difference should help me, thanks!

  2. Good example of a grammatical error you found. This is something I struggle with sometimes as well.
