I’m pretty sure everyone has seen a
post on Facebook that incorrectly uses “your” or “you’re.” I see posts like this all the
time. My personal favorite is when someone makes fun of people who use “your”
and “you’re” incorrectly, but make the mistake themselves. There are countless
memes out there about “your” and “you’re” because it is a mistake made by many
people all the time. I think the best way to not mix up the two is to keep
practicing and learning more about what they mean. Who knows, maybe even the
memes can be educational and help someone see the difference between them.
Page 219 of the Topical Guide talks
about the difference between these words. “Your” is the possessive form of
“you.” It shows ownership. An example of this in a sentence is “I love your new sweater.” The “your” in this
sentence refers to the owner of the sweater.
The word “you’re” is short for “you
are.” An example of this would be: “You’re my best friend.” The use of the word “you’re” in
this phrase is just a shorter way of saying “You are my best friend.”
Editing Mistake:
I saw an editing mistake in a
Snapchat advertisement the other day. It was a pretty obvious mistake so I’m a
little surprised it even made it onto the app. I actually had to read it a
couple of times to make sure I wasn’t going crazy. It says, “Is this end of
your eye bags?” I think they meant to say “Is this the end of your eye
bags?"

It's embarrassing to admit, but I sometimes make the your-you're mistake when I'm texting lately. I fully know the proper way, but it still happens sometimes. I know it as soon as I do it and send a corrective text, but I can't get past it. I take it as my punishment for making fun of the mistake so often.
ReplyDeleteYour vs. you're has always been something I've been a stickler about. I used to correct all of my friends in high school whenever they used the wrong one. I get so angry with myself when I do accidentally send a text using you're vs. your, or vice versa. Just like Melanie, I always send a corrected text right after I've caught myself.
ReplyDeleteVery good points! I'm pretty shocked that Snapchat let that error go through, good eyes catching that one. Also, great points on your and you're. That is something that we all can work on and be careful about.
