I read a rhetorical article about figure of
speech that came from the Encyclopedia of Britannica. It was written by the
Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica. Figure of speech is an intentional
deviation from a real statement that clarifies both written and spoken
language. In my opinion, sometimes figure of speech is hard to explain to a person, but seems to be easy to use in
writing.
Most figures in everyday speech are made or
created by extending our vocabulary that we are already familiar with. A form
of speech that I personally like, is hyperbole. This is an exaggeration for an
effect. An example of this would be "I am so upset i could chew
nails" or "If I don't get that new purse, I will die." This is
an exaggeration, and is something that really wouldn't happen but we say it for
the bigger effect.
One hyperbole that I use constantly, is the
phrase “I am so tired… I am going to die.” Though that may not be a great one
to use or say, I tend to use It after a long day at work and school, inferring
that I am really tired and need to get some sleep now. What are some figures of
speech you guys like to use?
