This week was a time-consuming task thumbing through the many
pages of The AP Stylebook. It was worth the task because I learned a lot of things. I needed an important
refresher on composition titles. I did not know before reading through AP that
computer games need to be in quotes. I also learned about the rule of months.
The rule says to abbreviate the months Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov. and
Dec. when the month is used with a specific date. Spell out the month when it
is used alone or with a year. Another
important factor to note when using months is that when only a month and a year
are listed in a phrase, do not separate the year with a comma.
One rule that is
important to remember from The AP Stylebook is the suffix -ly. This suffix on an adverb modifies the adjective that it
precedes and does not require a hyphen. Examples of these adverbs are a badly damaged island and a fully informed woman. Other adverbs,
for example, the words well and little, are used with a hyphen. Examples of these adverbs include well-known and little-known. I was confused about when to not use the hyphen
before reading The AP Stylebook. I’ve marked my book with plenty of notes from
this week and I hope this post helps some
of my fellow classmates!
I felt the same way! At first I thought it was time consuming then I realized that I learned so much from thumbing through the book. Also, I love that punctuation meme.
