Week 7
Hello classmates!
This week I really got a heavy dose of AP stylebook love, and from all your posts, I can see that you all did as well! The most important thing that I learned this week was exactly how to use the AP stylebook in the correct ways. It was a process for me to learn exactly what term I should look up to find what I needed. It took a lot of time for me to complete the assignments this week and I really tried to use the book constantly as a tool for success.
I was shocked at how intuitive it really is—how it’s designed so perfectly to be simple to use. Although it took me a while, by the end of the assignment I was flipping through the pages like it was second nature, and I immediately knew where I should search for certain rules.
One of my favorite finds this week was that play-offs isn’t hyphenated! That one really surprised me. I often expect journalistic writing to be more proper, but I’ve found recently that it follows the simplest, most intuitive path, and that generally the rules are exceptionally easy to understand.
This week I saw a couple of common editing mistakes on signs throughout the country of Ireland! They really like to say “Alright” instead of “all right.” I saw it so many times that I decided to check if they spell it differently here! They don’t…
Hope these tips were informative!
Isn't it crazy how many people spell "alright" instead of "all right?" When I first saw it, I did not even believe it was correct to say "all right." That's how ingrained in the world it has become!
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI'm still in awe of all the wrong ways we use the English language. I wonder how I've gotten through life all these years using okay instead of ok. This class along with the rest that I'm taking is helping me to improve.
Good luck!
It's so awesome once we can flip through that book quickly! I use tabs to help me remember where the punctuation section and other section I use often are.
