I thought the finding headlines homework would be a pain, but I really enjoyed it. I have never paid attention to headlines. They have always been the words I read to get information. I did not realize that headlines could be so creative. My favorite headline of the week is: Real-Life Iron Man Sets Record For Fastest Time In Jet Suit. From the first line, I am already entertained. I chose to read this article because it mentioned Iron Man and jet suit. The rest of the article was just bonus.
Here is one of the headlines I found that was not as good: Julia Roberts thinks Wonder is a ‘superhero movie.’ When I first read this, I thought it said Julia Roberts thinks Wonder Woman is a ‘superhero movie.’ Yes, “Wonder Woman” is a superhero movie. Why is Roberts stating the obvious? I then realized she was actually talking about her new movie “Wonder.” This headline would work better if “Wonder Woman” had not come out somewhat recently. I doubt I was the only one to make the same mistake.
My grammar mistake for the week comes from a famous poet: Emily Dickinson. She wrote amazing poetry, but struggled with correct grammar. She wrote it’s instead of its on the second line of her poem.
I too thought this week's homework would be difficult, but I enjoyed it! I really like both of your examples. It is nice to find headlines that help grab your attention. There are so many variables to consider when writing headlines.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness how crazy is that! It's nice to know famous authors made grammar mistakes too because sometimes I feel like I can't go a day without making one.
