Week 13-14 Blog Post 12/2/2017
Hello classmates!
I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving break. I spent most of it eating pumpkin pie and watching college football!
I am fascinated by web design and principles. I took Web Usability as an MPC elective. We discussed most of the principles listed in the articles we read for this assignment. There is one principle I feel is most important when designing a website, that is the purpose. Why are you making a website? Who is your audience? What do you want users to do when they visit your website? Are you calling them to action or informing them about an issue? All other principles assist the website in fulfilling its purpose. I think Marines.com is a great example. I am not trying to recruit any of you, but it has a clear purpose: recruiting enlisted Marines and commissioned officers.
Marines.com design is centered around recruiting. The information, pictures, simplicity, usability, navigation, contrast and typography are aids to get people to enlist or become an officer in the Marine Corps. This principle should be at the heart of any website's design.
My editing mistake was in an email from a factory that we purchase material from. The customer service representative was communicating about a new product feature. In their correspondence, they said, "This is great for those customer that need the wider width." Customer should be plural. They also used redundancy with wider widthThe sentence should read, "This is great for those customers who need the extra width."
Steve.
Purpose is very important. The websites that seem the most useless are the ones where I can’t figure out what is going on. What is the point of making a website if there is no purpose?
ReplyDeleteI agree, having the right purpose to attract the right audience is crucial. I also like your link to marines.com. It's clear, simple, and powerful website. Great article.
ReplyDeleteI really like your example of marines.com. It communicates a powerful message. Even the photo itself is very striking.
