Week 15

I was excited to hear we would be taking on the role of an editor this week. It was cool to implement the knowledge we have learned this semester and put it to good use. For the assignment, I edited a paper for a friend of mine. I learned a lot about editing throughout the experience. Without this course, I would have been completely lost while editing.

One of the suggestions from this week's reading that I focused on a lot while editing was accentuating the positive. While editing my friend's writing, I made sure to point out many aspects of her work that I liked.  I also pointed out mistakes by stating, "What if you chose this word (or phrase) instead?" I think this made my suggestion seem less critical and more like a helpful tip.

Throughout the editing experience, I realized that editing is something very beneficial to both the editor and the writer. While it helps the writer fix issues in their writing, editing also aids the editor notice areas where they could improve in their job.

This experience taught me a lot about how being an editor works. I think I still have a lot to learn about editing, but I am proud of what I have learned so far.

It's been a great semester; good luck to everyone on finals!

  2. I really liked that you accentuated the positive. We forget when giving feedback that people actually do good things! I also like your approach to helping them improve. Best of luck.
