Punctuation has always been tricky
for me. I feel like I am a good speaker, but writing those words down on paper
and doing so correctly is another story. This week’s assignment was a tough one
for me, especially when it gets really technical. One thing that I learned
about myself is that I tend to use commas too much, so I am going to try and
really think about when it is necessary for a comma and when it is just extra fluff.
A new rule which I learned for AP writing has also to do with commas. I found out about the serial comma, and I
found out because I missed the question on the assignment. I so desperately
wanted the oxford comma to be an acceptable answer, but alas, it was not the
correct one. The question stated “The flag is red, white, and blue.” Or “The
flag is red, white and blue.” The correct answer was the first choice, which
really kind of bugs me.
At my job, a new pay structure was
released for all sales reps. It was sent out as a letter to all employees,
including the owner and CEO of the company. As I was reading over the new pay
structure and statements from the newsletter, I noticed a punctuation mistake.
I failed to take a picture, as I did not know I would have needed to. It was a
sentence that was structured like “…each sales-rep will now be entitled to…”
and I noticed that the hyphen in the sentence should not be there. Very small
mistake, but it is cool that I caught it!
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI agree in everything you said in your blog. It's as if you know what you want to say and write, but their's a rule hanging over your head telling you it's wrong. It's been difficult adjusting to editing because I have always taken it for granted and used spell check. We will all learn together. Good luck in the class.
The oxford comma is my favorite comma! I always have to watch my writing when I am using AP style because it will get me ever time.
