I think that my 11th secret to
writing well is to write as much as possible. In the book, it mentioned to read
as much as possible. That way you'll be learning and remembering correct
grammar as you continue to read more and more. I think writing is the same way.
The more you continue to write, the better you will become at writing.
I
was surprised to see as many grammar mistakes as I did this week. When you
start looking, you really start to see how many people don't know proper
grammar. Now I can't say much...this week's grammar check-up really made me see
how much more I need to learn.
The most mistakes I found either
include wrong word usage, or incorrect punctuation. A salesman that I send
emails to back and forth at work uses “It’s” rather than “Its” all the time. It
was interesting to me because he’s part of the forefront of the company! How many
people see his incorrect use of grammar? A sign I found in a bathroom at a
Chevron in Salt Lake that said, "Employee's must wash their hands." I
didn't think it was that hard to know the difference between plural and
possessive! Maybe people just like sprinkling in commas for extra flavor. An
acquaintance of mine on Facebook use the word “desserted” rather than “deserted.”
He said, “My house is desserted tonight. Anyone wanna hang?” I just imagine a
house full of desserts. Now that’s my kind of house!
I’m so glad I’m taking this class,
because one day I hope to be the person that stops something from being sent out
or being made or printed that has incorrect grammar on it. I’ve never really
looked for bad grammar before, but now that’s all I am going to see!
A desserted house sounds amazing. ALso, it's great to be excited about this subject.
ReplyDeleteI agree that writing as much as possible is very helpful. It does help you learn and remember the concepts more, but it also helps you see unnecessary words or information that you could remove. Thanks for the tip!
