Cami Sabin, Week 7

The Associated Press Stylebook has definitely helped me to become a more articulate and consistent writer. My post today about things I learned from the book will probably be a little different from most of the posts from other students, however. I certainly have learned skills in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. The plurals section is particularly useful. But I actually really like to read random entries and learn little nuggets that I didn't know before. For example, today I learned that the city I always referred to as Calcutta, India, is actually now called Kolkata. I also learned that the term Kriss Kringle, which I always thought was just another term for Santa Claus, is derived from the German word Christkindl, referring to baby Jesus. I feel like these little nuggets will prepare me for my dream of one day being on Jeopardy. Okay, that isn't my dream. It used to be, though. And my husband does say that I know more random trivia than anyone he knows, and he refuses to go against me in Trivial Pursuit. Thank you, Associated Press Stylebook.

The editing mistake for this week comes from the CBS News Facebook page. I think they must have interns running the social media posts, because I have seen a lot of errors recently on this page. This one caught my attention because we recently had the "It's about its" assignment.

The article is titled "Amazon's Whole Foods is stealing customers from everybody." The text of the hook says, "It's price-slashing strategy in the cutthroat grocery market is already making competition even more intense." I hope you caught it... "It's" should be "Its" with no apostrophe. With the apostrophe, the word becomes a contraction of "it is," which would not be correct in this context.
