the ISMS- Post #9

We as a society, more than ever have to be careful about what we say and how we say it, because "sexism" is real, and it is defensive to people. Sexism is language that insults, stereotypes or excludes women. It treats men as the norm. Being inclusive and by using nonsexist language, is positive and can happen in our society.

Though we may not mean to say or write things that are sexist, we actually do tend to say things in our daily conversations. For instance, take a look into an elementary school classroom. Teachers who are talking to their students about career pathways, teach them and mention to them that they can become a "fireman", but not a "firewoman." You may also hear the teacher talking about how you could become a "congressmen."

You could also take into consideration that we say "mankind." What we don't say, is "womenkind" or even "people kind" to keep it neutral and fair. Now those just sound weird, but maybe that is because we have only been taught to use mankind

Below is a photo that says "come on guys." We do not typically say "come on girls," unless it is all girls, but if it is a combination of men and women, we tend to use the phrase "come on guys."
