Week 10, Great leads for the win.
Nowadays, a lead in a news story is more critical than ever. With the overload of news stories found on the internet, the lead of the story helps the reader determine whether or not it's worth their time to read. The lead basically captures the essence of the story in one sentence. I really like summary leads because they get straight to the point. They usually capture a few of the answers to the questions: who, what, when, where, and why. However, I think more people are likely to continue to read a story if it is an impact lead because then it gets the reader involved.
I found a good example of an impact lead in an article found on usatoday.com. It said, "Gasoline Prices have spiked for most of the U.S. -- and especially the Midwest-- during a period in which motorists are usually experiencing relief at the pump."
It is obvious that the spike of gas prices in the U.S. will negatively impact people that purchase gas. It stressed that people in the Midwest will be impacted the most. The information is factual. The lead was then backed up with more impact throughout the story. I like impact leads because before I read the story they help me understand what's in it for me and why it's important to me. This lead really caught my attention and I wanted to read the whole story.
This week, I found a grammar error in an email I received from my church. It said, "Come with your families, come with your neighbors and friends, or on your own." It's not consistent. I would revise it to say, "Come with your families, neighbors, friends, or simply yourself."
I agree Ashlee, leads are more critical nowadays than I've ever noticed before. Summary leads are also my favorite. They get straight to the point and let the reader know what to expect in the article. Impact leads are great, but I tend to skip over them often because there are so many to choose from. Great example!
ReplyDeleteI liked how you edited the grammar mistake to add the parallelism. Overall makes it a much stronger invitation!
